Quota and related topics are described in this page.

Definition of Terms:

• Quota： In Vite network, CPU cycles, storage space and network bandwidth consumed in transactions are paid by quota, instead of transaction fees or gas.
• UT： Unit Transaction. 1 UT is equivalent to the quota amount consumed in one transfer transaction without comment.
• PoW： Abbr. of "Proof of Work", representing a certain amount of computational work that has been performed
• Stake： Lock up an certain amount of VITE in account in exchange for quota
• Staking address：The address of the account from which the staking transaction is initiated
• Quota beneficiary：The account receiving quota

What is Quota

In Ethereum, in order to have transaction executed quickly, user usually has to offer miner a competitive gas fee. The higher the fee is offered, the sooner the transaction will be executed. This is a typical bidding model, where system's processing capacity and pending transaction amount are balanced by gas price. This model works fine in Ethereum, however, it is not easy for a user to determine what price is "competitive but not exaggerated" at a certain time. Too low or too high offering will cause market failure. Moreover, Ethereum's gas is associated with transactions, there is no measurement to allocate computational resources efficiently at account level.

Vite does not charge transaction fee. Instead, an amount of quota is consumed when sending transaction. All operations, including transfer, deploying smart contract, calling smart contract, issuing token, registering SBP, retrieving mining rewards, voting and staking, consume quota. To meet this requirement, a unique quota generation and consumption model is implemented in Vite network.

To get quota for your account, you can

• Obtain a piece of small, one-time quota by calculating a PoW puzzle upon sending transaction, or
• Stake VITE coin

Staking Recommended

Calculating PoW is sufficient if you intend to send only a few transactions. But if many transactions are to be sent in a short time, you should stake.

We recommend you stake.

In addition, each character in comment field of transaction consumes 68 quota.

For example, sending a transfer transaction with comment of '0x0001' (two hexadecimal characters) will consume ${\it Q} = 21000 + 68 * 2 = 21136$ quota, which translates to 1.0065 UT.

Additional Quota Cost

• Due to implementation of VEP-8, a 2-char prefix that takes additional 136 quota will be added to your comment if you send a transaction with comment in Vite official wallet.
• If Response Latency is assigned upon smart contract creation, an additional quota of $200 \times ResponseLatency$ will be charged for response transactions of the contract. Response latency defines a waiting number that specifies in how many confirmations the contract will produce a response transaction for request.

Quota Calculation

Quota is calculated by the following formulas:

$$Q_{PoW}=Qm \times (1- \frac{2}{1+e^{Qc \times \xi d \times \rho d}})$$

$$Q_{Stake}=Qm \times (1- \frac{2}{1+e^{Qc \times \xi s \times \rho s}})$$

• $Q_{PoW}$: Quota received through PoW. Valid only for the current transaction
• $Q_{Stake}$: Quota received through staking. This quota is recovered every snapshot block, and, if not used, is able to accumulate for up to 75 snapshot blocks
• $Qm$: Quota cap of account
• $Qc$: Quota factor, related to total quota consumed in last 74 snapshot blocks
• $\xi d$: Difficulty of PoW puzzle that has been resolved
• $\rho d$: Calculation weight of PoW
• $\xi s$: Staking amount of account
• $\rho s$: Calculation weight of staking

In Vite network, quota cap and calculation weights are constants:

• $Qm$ = 1000000
• $\rho d$ = 6.259408129e-10
• $\rho s$ = 4.201037667e-24

Quota factor is calculated by the following formula:

• $g$: Average quota consumed in last 74 snapshot blocks

UTPS: Unit transactions per second, referring to the number of unit transactions that an account can send in one second

$$UTPS=\frac{Q_{Stake}}{21000}$$

UTPE: Unit transactions per epoch, referring to the number of unit transactions that an account can send in 75 snapshot blocks

$$UTPE=UTPS \times 75$$

The available quota of an account depends on UTPS and quota consumption during the last 74 snapshot blocks. For example, Account A receives 1 UTPS quota through staking, no transaction occurs during the last 74 snapshot blocks, in this case, the available quota of Account A is 75 UT.

The actual available quota of an account upon sending transaction depends on UTPS, quota consumption during last 74 snapshot blocks and PoW. For example, Account B receives 1 UTPS quota through staking, no transaction occurs during the last 74 snapshot blocks, while he also calculated a PoW equivalent to 2 UT, in this case, the actual available quota of Account B is 77 UT.

Quota Cap

For a single transaction, the maximum quota can be consumed is defined as 47.62 UT.

For convenience in calculation, it is practical to calculate value of $(\xi d \times \rho d)$ or $(\xi s \times \rho s)$ and then map the result to quota according to the following table:

According to the table, regardless of PoW, staking 10000 VITE will receive 1 UTPS, or maximum 75 UTPE quota, while staking 20007 VITE will receive 2 UTPS, or maximum 150 UTPE quota. Staking 134 VITE also qualifies for sending a transfer transaction without comment after lying idle for 74 snapshot blocks, which translates to 1 UTPE.

Dynamic Quota Consumption

To avoid network congestion, a scheme called Dynamic Quota Consumption is implemented in Vite network. In this method, the total quota consumed in last 74 snapshot blocks is referenced to measure the congestion, so as to adjust quota consumption accordingly. The higher congestion the network is in, the more staking or more difficult PoW is required.

Quota factor Qc in quota calculation formula is specifically for this purpose.

Two Methods to Obtain Quota

Staking

Quota can be obtained through staking. The beneficiary account will receive the corresponding quota after the staking transaction is successful.

• Staking amount: The minimum staking amount is 134 VITE
• Address of quota beneficiary: The address that receives quota. This is can be any valid address. In other words, you can stake for yourself or others.

Staked VITE coins will be deducted from user's balance and locked up in built-in contract during the whole staking period. Staking account is able to retrieve the staking after 259,200 snapshot blocks (about 3 days) by sending a cancel transaction.

Calculating PoW

User can obtain one-time quota by calculating a PoW puzzle upon sending transactions. For example, the difficulty required is 0x3FFFFFF for sending a transfer transaction without comment through PoW.

Vite network provides official PoW service at the time being.

Calculation Steps

1. Convert $difficulty$ to $target$ according to the following formula:

$$target=\frac{2^{256}}{1+\frac{1}{difficulty}}$$

• $difficulty$: 256-bit PoW difficulty. Padding 0 in front if the number is less than 256 bits length
• $target$: 256-bit PoW target. Usually the first bit is 1.

For example, given $difficulty$ = 0x3FFFFFF, then $target$ = 0xFFFFFFC000000000.

2. Calculate $nonce$ based on transaction's data. In this process, a widely range of random numbers are assigned to $nonce$ until the following condition is satisfied:

$$blake2b(address+prevHash) + nonce < target$$

• $blake2b$: Hash function in Vite
• $address$: User's account address
• $prevHash$: Hash of previous account block

FAQ

• Can I stake for multiple quota beneficiaries?

Yes. In this case, you should send separate staking transactions for different beneficiary addresses. Each staking has independent expiration time.

• Can I stake for the same beneficiary for multiple times?

Yes, this will generate multiple staking records and the staking amount will be added up.

• Can I retrieve my VITE coins, which were staked to a quota beneficiary, in multiple times?

It depends on how many times you staked for the beneficiary. If you staked only once, you must retrieve them all.

• Can I retrieve if my staking has not expired yet?

No. But you can once it expires.

• Is it possible that the quota received through staking will be used up?

Yes, temporarily. Quota obtained through staking is related to staking amount and actual quota consumption of the account in the last 74 snapshot blocks. If your quota shows 0 in wallet, you cannot send or receive transactions at the moment. However, it will be restored in the next second and be able to accumulate up to 74 snapshot blocks.

• Can a beneficiary receive quota staked from separate staking addresses?

Yes. In this case, the quota of beneficiary address will be added up.

• I want to receive a transaction. Do I need quota?

Yes, receiving a transaction consumes 21,000 quota, or 1 UT.

• How to receive a transaction for new account?

You can get one-time quota by calculating a PoW puzzle, or have someone stake for you.

• If the network is jammed, can I still send transaction?

Yes you can. But you need spend more quota than usual. It's recommended that you wait for a while to send the transaction if it's not urgent.
